Jessica Hainsworth Wins the Children of the America's Dressage Invitational!

Jessica started riding at the age of 5 when she was given her first horse for her birthday...a 32 inch miniature! From there Jessica has been very active in 4-H becoming the NY State Champion at Training and First level at age 11. She has been dedicated to a pursuit of learning, teaching and overall horsemanship through her membership in the United States Pony Club since age 9. She recently passed her C2 Traditional rating which encompasses testing on the requirements of all phases of eventing at heights of 3 foot for cross country and stadium fences, as well as upper level horsemanship skills and veterinary knowledge. In her club, she often teaches the younger pony club members the benefits that dressage can bring to their eventing training and is often asked to be a team advisor for rallies and/or assistant for camps or testings. She hopes to achieve her A rating as a specialist in dressage over the next few years. Jess has been a recipient of 4-H Horseman of the Year and has represented her county and region at the state level in competitions in everything from horse judging, western and reining, to huntseat, showing miniature horses, horse related public speaking competitions and of course, dressage. She was the winner of the Yaraman trophy for Excellence in Dressage from her pony club, last year she received the Bronze medal award for 1st level performance from USPC, and most recently won the JR/YR Dressage Championships Kitwell Consul Challenge Cup for the highest scoring rider on an Arabian or part Arabian at Dressage4kids this year. Jessica was on a team representing USPC at Dressage4kids last year and earned a trip to CADI 2009 as a Dressage4Kids team member riding her eventing paint mare and repeated that again this year riding a Han./Arab cross after just a few rides on him. This summer the Kurr family and trainer Paula Cahill, offered Jessica a super opportunity to ride their schoolmaster Orion and train with them as if she were part of their family! It was due to their generosity that Jessica's journey continued, as after winning first level equitation for 12-15 year olds with a score of 98% she scored a 66.111% under Scott Hassler with Orion to earn a spot on her second US team heading to CADI.

CADI is the dream of Grand Prix rider and trainer Jane Karol of Concord, Ma it stands for The Children of the Americas Dressage Invitational. Several years ago she started CADI, an international show where they invite North and South American riders ages 12-14 to come together to compete, offering them top international experience prior to FEI Juniors. On arrival the international riders are provided with quality horses and draw from a hat to borrow them for the event. CADI provides trainers from the US and Netherlands to coach them through the week all whom have shown through Grand Prix and many having Pan Am and Olympic games experience. CADI is as much about the training you receive as the competition! Every Federation in South America and the Caribbean can nominate one rider to represent them at CADI and the US and Canadian riders must qualify by either competing at Dressage4kids as that organization sponsors one team of 3 to 4 US riders which are the top scoring riders showing at First level or above from that event, or ride at a CDI that offers that class to earn a qualifying score. It is held in Concord every October and is a 5 day event with the first day getting details like drawing horses and trainer assignments out of the way. They also have the University of New Hampshire Equine program come to do a basic horse care lesson as all riders are expected to take full care and responsibility for the horse they are given, and for some riders this is the first time they have to muck a stall so it is valuable information for them.

The next 2 days are training sessions and include a one hour lesson with your trainer, this year Jessica was assigned Cindi Rose-Wylieof Rosebrook Farm who did a super job working with her and the horse she was loaned for the event. US and Canadian riders who live within 600 miles must bring a horse to compete on, this year Jessica's trainer Leanne Haley- Brown of Wilson, NY very generously donated the use of her personal horse Rambutan, a 17.2 hand Hessen. Many would not have considered loaning a horse of this caliber to a junior rider and this speaks to the type of person Leanne is and her generosity to do this for her rider! With a distance of an hour and 45 minutes between her and Jessica, the pair had just 3 lessons together before Jessica brought him home to Geneseo for a week leading up to the event to work with him and get to know him a little better. Despite being a new pairing and competing against riders of whom many train full time during the day and home school at night, Jess and Rocky as he is known at the barn, settled right in together and got right to work in these early training sessions. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate and rain kept all of the riders away from the show grounds and in an indoor located nearby until Friday which was when they rode the FEI Childrens Prelimiary Test. Judges for the event were Kathy Connelly, Suzanne Handler, and Sarah Geikie. Not your typical show grounds, the site is boarded on ringside by 2 large festival tents and a hillside, so as your not able to ride around the outside and 100 foot tents flapping literally feet away from the ring it can prove a bit exciting for some horses and not being able to let the horse see it before the test kept the anxiety level up for many riders to see how the horses would handle it up there. Jessica was assigned first rider of the first day... despite that, she ended up tied for first place with an average score of 68.261% as the US riders finished the day and was placed second on the podium by a one point difference in in the collectives, not a bad way to start the competition!

The order of go was flipped for the second and final day of competition meaning she would go last, as the riders performed their freestyles we knew it would be very close as scores that day were higher by 5-6 percentage points. Jessica and Rocky had a great ride in their freestyle test and earned another 2nd place with an average score of 71.547%. Then on to the overall championship awards, Jessica was named the US National Grand Champion and stood atop the podium as the Star Spangled banner played for the first time for her. It was a memory that she will never forget! Along with the grand champion ribbons she was awarded a new Diana riding coat and britches from Pikeur, a pair of signature leather gloves, a gift certificate for Dover Saddlery and Smartpack Equine, all whom were sponsors for the event. As grand champion she was also requested to ride in the Freestyle Serious Fun which is a Bearspot Farm for equine assisted psychotherapy fundraiser, and was to be held the next day. That morning 7 local Grand Prix riders came to the farm and in front of a crowd of several hundered people competed for the audience and judges top scores where all members of the audience had keypads to register a vote for each rider. These were true Grand Prix freestyles with lots of tricks like one handed freestyle canter pirouettes, and riding one tempis while waving to the crowd. Jessica was the first rider of the show and performed her freestyle in front of the amazing crowd as they were served brunch under the tents with the judges.

As part of CADI, Deborah Withers of Withers and Withers All Natural Horse Treats who boards her horse at Jane Karol's farm and offers her beautiful warmblood Norman to the International riders every year, also sponsors one $500 dollar scholarship to further the riders dressage education and defray costs of coming to CADI. Each rider is asked to send an application and letter explaining why they are deserving of as well as a letter of reference with the application, Jessica was awarded this scholarship as well from her application and was acknowledged in the event for her dedication to dressage and was told she "exemplified everything they had in mind when they created this scholarship!"

Jessie is the oldest of 4 children, she owns a paint mare and of course her mini, and is now searching for her next equine partner to help her reach her goals in dressage for the future. When not riding, she is an avid basketball player who competes on numerous travel and school teams throughout the year including at the AAU level as her team's point guard. Jessica would not be where she is today without the wonderful and generous support of the Kurr Family, Paula Cahill and of course her super friend and trainer Leanne Haley-Brown! Thank you does not begin to express what it has meant to her to have the support of so many around her, and it will be exciting to see where her next path leads!

Brenna's International Games Exchange Experience

Brenna Donegan shares her experience doing international games!

Hello, my name is Brenna Donegan and I am grateful to Genesee Valley Pony Club, Western New York Region, United States Pony Club and to my family and friends for their love, support, and financial contribution to my USPC 2010 Games Exchange. I had an amazing time. I enjoyed getting to know my teammates Addie, Emily, Julia and Laurie. We had a great time together. Our coach Jo Emblin was awesome. She was more than just a coach; she was a supportive friend as well. Our chaperone Andrea Cone was wonderful. She took great care of us and she was like a second mom to me. Andrea and Jo were a great team guiding us and helping us throughout the tour as well as over the months leading up to the tour.
Sunday July 25 I took a plane to Maryland for training camp. My teammates and I stayed at the Cone family home. Our chaperone Andrea Cone and our Coach Jo Emblin took great care of us. Training camp took place on July 26, 27 and 28. We went to Nationals in Virginia to Lane Judge and do some more fund raising July 29, and 30 and headed back to the Cone’s on July 31st to pack and prepare for our tour.
We headed out on Sunday, August 1st...We were on our way!

Day 1...Heathrow Airport in London...We met up with the teams from Great Britain and Australia, and about 5 hours later the Canadians arrived. We travelled to our first host family about 3 hours away. We all stayed in big tents, it was a lot of fun.

Day 2...We visited Dunster Castle, which was really pretty. We took a long hike and saw an amazing view of the countryside.

Day 3...We wet to the North Devon County Show. All of the international teams were scrambled on to teams with each other for some friendly competitions to help everyone get to know each other and to have fun...and it was fun.

Day 4...We went to Butlins Amusement Park and had a lot of fun. We also visited a village called Minehead and took a trail ride on the Exmoor Moors. It was beautiful.

Day 5...We took a nice hike at the Valley of the Rocks. We had some time at Woolacoombe Beach, it was so beautiful. We visited the villages of Linton and Lynmouth and we had fish and chips for dinner.

Day 6...We packed up, Thanked our hosts and headed on our way to Kent.

Day 7...We spent time with our new host families and settled in. At this home I was paired up with a girl named Amber Williams from Great Britain. She was very nice and energetic. She was also the first person that I had met at the Heathrow airport the first day. We all enjoyed a barbecue together in the evening.

Day 8...We visited Greenwich Park, the site of the Equestrian Olympic Games for 2012. We met the manager and toured the grounds. It was amazing. We walked the tunnel under the Thames River to the Isle of the Dogs.

Day 9...We visited London for the day. We saw the Kings Troop,(Royal Artillery) and the Royal Mews, and we had tea at the Ginning’s Hotel. It was really wonderful.

Day 10 and on…We travelled to Warwickshire and settled in with our new host family…For the third leg of the tour I stayed with Addie Thornley from our USA team, Lauren Slater from Australia and Stephanie Strome from Canada. We all got along very well. Our Host Mom managed a riding center and rode horses for a living. She took us on a trail ride one of the days, it was awesome.

We had our competition on the last day. The team from Great Britain took first place overall, it was their day! It was their first time playing games together as a team which I found to be very impressive! The team from Australia placed second and our team was close behind them with third overall… just two points behind. The Canadian team took forth over-all.

That night we all got dressed up and had dinner together and said our good-byes. I am grateful for the time that I spent on the 2010 USPC Games Tour. It was an amazing experience. I made great friends and I have great memories that will last a lifetime.

Sincerely,
Brenna Donegan

D/C Fun Eventing Rally

GVPC sent two full teams to the "Fun" Eventing Rally this year in Olean, NY. There was a team of Ashley Stappenback, Greta and Madison Muxworthy scrambling with Hannah Hitchcock from East Aurora Pony Club. Paul Cripps, Kyle Hainsworth, Josef Thorne and Emily Gray had a great time at their first eventing rally with the help of their C advisor, Jessica Hainsworth. Faith Hainsworth rode in the D1 division which consisted of a dressage test and jumping course over groundpoles.

Personal bests were had by all. The older girls group successfully introduced their new horses to the eventing discipline. The team of newbies rode strong! Paul and Daisy faced bears (as reported by xc jump judge Amy) and maintained a canter in dressage. Kyle convinced Carson that xc could be fun through perseverance and hard work. Joe and Cinnamon are old pros in the open and when Cinnamon spied another pony ahead of her she thought she was back in the pony races handily overtaking her opponent. Emily competed on a brand new pony named Tick Tock and proved what a great match they are. Faith, the confident young lady that she is, cantered around the show jumping round.

The Payne family generously donated their land for this rally and did a great job. Thanks to them and Alley Cat Pony Club for all their hard work! A special thank you to our GVPC alums who volunteered as officials - Meghan Moran as the chief horse management judge and Kathleen Kirkwood as the technical delegate!

Regional D Camp

GVPC had 5 members attend the regional D camp this year at the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Palmyra: Maddy Muxworthy, Paul Cripps, Kyle Hainsworth, Josef Thorne and Maggie Lloyd (counselor). Despite some torrential downpours, the kids had a great time, learned alot and made new friends. The above photo is of the drill team demonstration the kids did for the parents at the end of camp.

I am Seamus Donegan and I played basketball, baseball, and football all throughout middle school and high school. It had been a long time since I had done tetrathalon, and I am so glad I decided to compete again! Thank you to the Miller Family for letting me stay in their beautiful home and taking such good care of me! I am so glad that I began riding horses such a long time ago; it is something that will stay with me forever. The people involved in the rally were so supportive; it was such a fun, wonderful experience!

Games Rally 2010

Genesee Valley sent 13 riders to the Western New York Regional games rally on June 12, 2010. The pony club motto is “a happy child on a happy horse”. My observations included many happy children. Huge smiles were seen on Carly Lloyd and Sophie Muxworthy as they participated on a mixed team ending with the annual tie for first place in the walk/trot division. They were helped with a healthy dose of enthusiasm from their team advisor, Maddy Muxworthy. I was especially proud of the Junior team as they proved not only their riding and games ability but their independence and ability to work together. Logan Ellis, Paul Cripps, Emily Gray and Josef Thorne were first overall and in horse management. Our Juniors have learned from the best as they had several good role models and mentors competing on advanced and senior teams. Greta Muxworthy, Ingrid and Gibson Donnan and Ashley Stappenbeck joined with Margot Miller from Red Jacket to win the Senior division. Our Advanced team of Maggie Lloyd, Seamus Donnegan and Amanda Moreland welcomed Jake Bryson from Red Jacket. Unfortunately there wasn’t another Advanced team to compete against so they gave the Seniors a real challenge as they rode with them. All exhibited fine horsemanship, excellent sportsmanship and games expertise.

The games, more than other pony club disciplines, really emphasizes teamwork. The three teams we sent have been playing games together since being in pony club and their ability to gel and work together was evident yesterday. As a line judge I was in a position to witness the team work and sportsmanship in both the ring and warm up area first hand. They knew their orders and plotted their warm-ups depending on what they needed to work on. They reminded their teammates when they forgot something, be it a rule or a helmet. They looked out for each other's well fair sharing water. They reminded their teammates that care of their mounts was paramount, not overtaxing them in the heat and keeping them cool under the shade tree. They cheered for all the teams including those from different clubs. They shared their mounts within the team and with the walk/trot division leading the youngest pony clubbers to a good time!

This was my first rally of the year and I was proud to be part of this organization. Thank you to our wonderful coach Amy Stappenbeck and rally organizers Meg Lloyd and Mary Donegan as well as all of our hard working volunteer moms and dads. We all wish Ingrid and Gibson Donnan good luck as they qualified for the National rally.

Dressage Rally 2010

What a great day for a rally! The day was sunny and warm and the kids were excited to participate in the first riding rally of the year. Heidi Lemke, Molly Fitzpatrick, Greta and Maddy Muxworthy rode on a team with Ashley Stappenback as their horse manager. Maggie Lloyd rode on a scramble team. Our newest member, Carly Lloyd, visiting from Colorado, had a enjoyable first experience sharing a pony with Sophie Muxworthy on a scramble D1 walk/trot team with East Aurora Pony club.

At the awards ceremony we were treated to a little history lesson from Dick Lavalle, owner of Will-O-View Farm and host of the rally. He informed us that his local club, 4PenNy was founded in 1965 and has been hosting rallies ever since. He was glad to see the kids eagerly participating and being self-sufficient. Ann Farkas, DC of that club, did a wonderful job of organizing a logistically difficult operation. Thank you to the Lavalles and 4PenNy for a great rally!

From the Livingston County News...

Avon’s Brenna Donegan named to international games team

To say that Brenna Donegan has been riding all her life is a statement that encompasses not only the days before she could walk, but her prenatal experiences as well. Coming from a family of avid riders, the 16-year-old Avon Central School sophomore has earned her equestrian stripes in foxhunting, pony races, eventing, and games, competing six times at the U.S. Pony Club (USPC) National Rally representing the Genesee Valley Pony Club, and twice at the NY State Fair with 4-H. It is little surprise, therefore, that Brenna has been selected to be on a team representing the United States in this year’s Pony Club International Games Exchange among the U.S., Canada, Australia, and England. The purpose of the exchange, this year being held in England, is to fulfill the goals and mission of USPC by providing a horse-related fun and educational experience for Pony Club members. To that end, the emphasis of the three-week tour is a cultural exchange among the teams from the participating countries because it offers a variety of educational experiences unique to the host country. In actuality, the competition, which takes place at the end of the tour, is secondary to the main purpose of the exchange: making friends and learning about the people, customs and culture of the host country. Team members are selected based on strong riding ability on a variety of horses, excellent horse management skills, personal qualities that would make them a good ambassador for USPC, support of Pony Club ideals, and demonstrated high standards of behavior. The competition will be comprised of relay race games requiring speed, balance and agility. The actual games are selected from a list of over two dozen possibilities, so riders must know all the various rules and practice the different skills in order to be prepared for whichever ones are chosen. Brenna will join teammates from Georgia, South Carolina, Maryland and Pennsylvania, who are required to cover their own expenses. (Horses are provided by the host country.) Therefore, our young athlete is seeking tax-deductable donations on her behalf in any amount to:

Mackenzie Williams (GVPC) riding Bob-Dew at the 2009 USPC Championships in Lexington, VA

“As a member of the United States Pony Club, I stand for the best in sportsmanship as well as in horsemanship. I shall compete for the enjoyment of the game well played and take winning or losing in stride, remembering that without good manners and good temper, sport loses its cause for being. I shall endeavor to maintain the best tradition of the ancient and noble skill of horsemanship, always treating my horse with the consideration due a partner.” - The Pony Club Pledge

The mission of the United States Pony Clubs, Inc. is to provide a program for youth that teaches riding, mounted sports, and the care of horses and ponies, thereby developing responsibility, moral judgment, leadership, and self confidence. The core activity of USPC is exemplified in the sport of eventing and involves riding on the flat, over fences, and in the open. Many of the competitors here at the Cosequin Stuart Horse Trials can credit some measure of their success to the foundation they received in pony club. Clubs can accept children as young as 6 and up to the age of 25. Nationally the organization is divided into regions. The Western New York region, which is made up of 12 clubs and 2 riding centers, has a long and colorful history. The Genesee Valley Pony Club was a charter member of the United States Pony Clubs, Inc. when it was established in 1954. The co-founder of Mendon Pony Club, Rufus Wesson (father of Stuart property owner and supporter Ebets Judson) went on to become president of the national organization. He’s famously quoted as saying that “pony club strives to produce a happy child on a happy horse.” Peggy Entrekin, graduate A from the Mendon Pony Club, is presently the executive director of USPC. The WNY region has produced a number of Olympians and international eventers including John Williams, Michael Barisone, Bonnie Mosser and Diann Roffe. This proud tradition of excellence continues with the pony clubbers of today. For more information on pony club and how to become a member you may contact the regional supervisor Kim Rengert at kmrengert@yahoo.com or 585-319-9799.

by Jessica Hainsworth, C-1, Genesee Valley Pony Club

What a year, and what a journey I have had. I am Jessica Hainsworth, a C-1 in the Genesee Valley Pony Club. I love dressage, and have had a great partner in my 10-year-old paint mare named Monday's Child. We have been competing together for a few years and this year our goal was to compete at the USPC Championships in Virginia. I qualified, and had a great time there, but that was just the beginning of my journey. I found out that I had been selected to represent USPC at the Youth Dressage Festival in early summer, and what an experience it was! I want to thank Pony Club for sponsoring a team to go to the Youth Dressage Festival held at the HITS grounds in Saugerties, NY. It was one of the best experiences of my life! I met wonderful riders from all around the country. I had a great time being part of the USPC team, setting up our tack room, meeting everyone's family and hearing where they were from... it was all so much fun! I had an amazing time.

My favorite memory was of riding with one of the roving trainers who like us, were young dressage riders too, but most are now top national level Young Riders. The work that I did with my roving trainer led me to a 4th place finish in my division overall. The experience of meeting great people like Laura Aiken, Lendon Gray, and so many more who have a real love of dressage and are so tremendously supportive of young riders and their dressage goals was so moving. Even though it was my first time there, I felt like family it was such a great, kind, supportive environment. Everyone was so nice throughout the entire week, from the judges to the other competitors; it was just one of the best experiences of my life. The end of the weekend was the special awards and special classes like dressage trail, Prix Caprilli, and lead line. It was a great way to end the weekend helping my little sister Faith, a D1 in Pony Club, get my horse ready for their lead line class. She was judged by Lendon Gray and was asked lots of questions about horse knowledge, which thanks to what she has learned in Pony Club, she knew them all from where the pommel was to that my horse was a piebald paint! She came in 2nd out of about 10 kids and it was so much fun to see her enjoy the weekend as much as I did.
